Hi and Welcome to my Homepage
This site is dedicated to the wonder of malawi Cichlids.

I have been caring for Cichlids for at least 5 years and have learnt lots about them which I would like to share with you .

This site is being developed all the time so please come back , and hopefully there will be more to show !!!
A adult male Cyrtocara moori My Favourite fish !!!
Species Name: Cyrtocara moori
Common Name(s): Malawi Dolphin
Country of Origin: Lake Malawi
Diet: Omnivore
Water Chemistry: pH 7.5 - 8.5, kH > 6
Temperature: 25 - 28 C

Breeding: Breeding is identical to most Malawi cichlids, the females are best kept in larger numbers with one or two males to four or five females. The females mouthbrood and the fry can be easily stripped from the female after ~21 days. It is also worth noting that the females seems to benefit from some time away from the male post mouthbrooding to recover in a female only tank.

Notes: For many years I longed to keep this gentle giant of Lake Malawi but did not have the room. Recently though, a empty 180L tank became available and I bought myself eight small moori hoping to start a colony. Unlike most other African cichlids, C. moori is a slow growing fish, I have had these eight individuals now for almost a year and they have grown from around 20mm to around the 10-12 cm mark. They show no signs of sexual maturity or dimorphism as yet although they are displaying great colour. The males seem to grow faster than the females and ultimately will reach a larger size, the male also has a larger nuchal hump on his head. C. moori is an easy fish to keep for the aquarist with a larger tank, they require similar water chemistry to all rift lake cichlids ie: hard and alkaline and would be an ideal species for the beginner as aggression in these fishes is fairly minimal.

C. moori is an unfussy feeder that will take frozen, dried and live foods, as an individual it would probably be better housed in a community tank of more peaceful Malawi cichlids such as peacocks.

Information about Lake Malawi
The lake is bordered and shared by three countries: Malawi, Tanzania and Mozambique and is known as Lake Malawi, Lake Nyasa, or Lake Niassa in each country respectively. Lake Malawi is the southernmost of the Western Rift Valley lakes of East Africa a nd is renowned for its remarkable fish fauna. It is partially due to the unique faunal characteristics of the lake that international attention has been engaged in its conservation and management. There have been estimates of between 500 and 1000 speci es of the family Cichlidae living in Lake Malawi, most of which are yet to be described. The lake is also the source of over 70% of the animal protein (as fish) available to the people of Malawi.
